Fire Behaviour

When we talk about fire behaviour, we are referring to a handful of parameters that are used to describe the way in which a given fire will behave. Those parameters are:

  • Rate of spread (ROS)
  • Flame height
  • Spotting distance
  • Intensity

These parameters are fundamental to how we manage fires.

This chapter will examine each of the above parameters.

To calculate these parameters you need to know the Fire Danger Index (FDI) and the fuel load so this chapter will also examine the FDI in some detail.
