Fuel moisture content (FMC), is quite possibly the most vital concept with regards to fire behaviour.

In both grassland fuel and forest fuel, the immediate, medium term and long term moisture conditions the fuel has been subjected to will have an effect on the moisture in both live and dead fuels.

In this chapter we look at FMC drivers such as:

  • Long term droughts
  • Recent rain effects
  • Aspect
  • Temperature and relative humidity
  • Rate of FMC change

We also look at field measurement of fuel moisture content.
