Bush fires and grass fires start under a variety of conditions and over the years a range of tools and theories have been developed to aid firefighters in their efforts to suppress fires. Many of these tools are still applicable today with some of the underpinning science still as relevant as ever.
This manual aims to provide members with the understanding and tools required to make informed decisions with regard to active fire behaviour or the potential of a fire and its behaviour should one start. It is also intended to be a reference manual for firefighters now and into the future.
It is important for firefighters to understand where this qualification fits in with respect to fire behaviour studies accessible within the RFS. Figure 1 shows the courses where specific fire behaviour study occurs.
